What is AICD & CRT Implantation?

AICD (Automated Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) and CRT (Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy) are specialized heart devices implanted to manage life-threatening arrhythmias and advanced heart failure.

  • AICD monitors your heart rhythm 24x7 and delivers a small shock if it detects dangerous arrhythmias like ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation, preventing sudden cardiac death.

  • CRT (or CRT-P/CRT-D) improves the pumping efficiency of a weak heart by sending coordinated electrical signals to both lower chambers (ventricles), helping them beat in sync.

Who Needs AICD or CRT?

You may be advised an AICD or CRT if you have:

  • History of ventricular arrhythmias or survived sudden cardiac arrest

  • Severe left ventricular dysfunction or low ejection fraction (EF <35%)

  • Advanced heart failure with frequent hospitalizations

  • Wide QRS complex or electrical conduction delay on ECG

  • Failed medical therapy and worsening symptoms (NYHA Class II-IV)

  • Previously implanted pacemaker that needs upgrade for heart failure

  1. You’re admitted and given local anesthesia with sedation

  2. A small incision is made below the collarbone

  3. One or more leads (wires) are inserted through a vein into your heart

  4. The AICD or CRT device is connected and placed under the skin

  5. The procedure takes 90–120 minutes

  6. You are monitored overnight and discharged next day with instructions

 

🛏️ Devices are programmed and checked using an external monitor, and regular follow-ups ensure proper functioning.
