Echocardiogram
(ECHO)
What is an Echocardiography (Echo)?
An Echocardiography (Echo) is a simple, non-invasive ultrasound test of the heart. It uses sound waves to create live moving pictures of your heart, showing how your heart chambers, valves, and muscles are working.
It helps your doctor assess:
- The size and shape of your heart
- How well your heart muscle contracts and relaxes
- Whether your valves are opening and closing properly
- The presence of any fluid, clot, or hole in the heart
- How well your heart pumps blood (ejection fraction)
Think of Echo as a video of your heart in action, not just a still picture.

How is an Echo Done?
An Echo test is completely safe and painless. Here’s what happens:
1. You’ll be asked to lie down comfortably on your left side.
2. A special gel is applied on your chest (it helps sound waves pass clearly).
3. The technician or cardiologist moves a small probe (transducer) over your chest.
4. The machine displays your heart’s motion on the screen in real time.
The test usually takes 10–20 minutes. There is no radiation, no injection, and no side-effect.
Your doctor may suggest an echo if you have:
- Chest pain, breathlessness, or swelling of feet
- Heart murmur (abnormal heart sound)
- High blood pressure or previous heart attack
- History of valve or congenital heart disease
- Irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)
- Before major surgery or cardiac procedure
- Follow-up after angioplasty, bypass, or pacemaker
Sometimes, even if ECG is normal, Echo gives additional insight into heart function.
When Should You Get an Echo?

Echocardiography can be done at:
- Heart clinics with an in-house cardiologist
- Hospitals and diagnostic centers
- Mobile echo services for bedside or ICU patients
At Nidaan Heart Clinic, echo is performed by trained staff under direct supervision of a cardiologist using high-resolution Doppler echo machines — ensuring quick, accurate, and reliable results.
Where Can You Get an ECHO Done?
Final Message from the Cardiologist
Echo is one of the most important tools to detect heart problems early. It’s safe, accurate, and gives a clear picture of how your heart is functioning.
“An Echo speaks louder than words — it shows how your heart truly feels.”
If you experience chest pain, breathlessness, or fatigue — don’t delay. A simple echo can help your doctor understand your heart’s story and guide treatment early.
